Tips on keeping your house cool this Summer

INSPIRATION

As energy costs increase alongside the average temperature of our Australian summers, we’re all looking for smart ways to keep our homes cool and comfortable. Your choice of window coverings can play a key role in insulating your home and protecting your interiors. In fact, did you know that up to 87%1 of heat gained in your home occurs through uncovered windows?

Yet with so many styles, designs and types of window coverings now available, it can be hard to know which options to choose. So, when it comes to keeping your home as cool as possible, here are a few tips to consider:

#1 - Look for options with active heat protection

Window coverings can - when made with the right fabric and design - actively repel heat and prevent it from entering the inside of your home.

Luxaflex® PolySatin® Plantation Shutters, for instance, have a unique construction which traps air within a distinct pocket. They are also made from a durable polyresin, which helps repel heat back through the window.

Luxaflex® Duette® Shades are also specifically engineered to provide beauty as well as energy efficiency in both cold and warm climates. The honeycomb structure of these unique shades traps air in distinct pockets which reduces heat loss in Winter and keeps your home cooler in Summer, thereby assisting to lower your overall energy consumption and energy bills. They are available in a single-cell design as well as the industry- leading Luxaflex®

#2 - Find ways to filter or block direct light

During summer, when the days are longer, the sun’s glare can be particularly intense. However, by choosing smart and fully adjustable window coverings, you can filter or angle the flow of light to make your interiors more comfortable.

Luxaflex® PolySatin® Plantation Shutters and Timber Plantation Shutters are a great option, as you can adjust them over the course of the day to control how much light enters your home. As the sun’s direction changes, you can simply adjust the angle of your shutters accordingly. By blocking the flow of direct sunlight as it suits, you can effectively moderate the temperature inside your home. Our shutters all have narrow units which are hinged accordion-style, and cover a part of the window opening when closed. The louvres or slats are controlled by a tilt bar or rod to allow you to control light, air flow and visibility.

Luxaflex® Curtains are another ideal solution for filtering direct light and keeping your interiors cool and comfortable. Our curtain range features a wide variety of fabrics, opacities and styles. Heavier fabrics can help you completely block out light and heat when required, and lighter fabrics can softly diffuse light and also allow plenty of air to flow into your interiors.

Luxaflex® Silhouette® Shadings, with their signature S-Vanes, can also help you transform harsh sunlight into gentle, diffused glow.

#3 - Choose options with UV protection built-in

It’s also possible to choose window coverings that actively block the UV rays which are both harmful to human health, and can cause interiors to fade.

Luxaflex® Silhouette® Shadings, for instance, are specifically made to filter harsh UV rays to protect your furnishings from damage - as are Luxaflex® Pirouette® Shadings and Luxaflex® Lumishade® Window Coverings. Made from 100% polyester, the Veri Shades® fabric in the Luxaflex® Lumishade® Window Covering range offers durable properties such as fade resistance and specific UV protection to help preserve the fabric and home furnishings from fading.

#4 - Invest in home automation

We offers a range of options when it comes to the operation of your blinds, shutters or awnings.

This includes PowerView® Motorisation, where your shades can be opened or closed with the touch of a button - even those on the exterior of your home. You can use either the Luxaflex® Pebble® remote to do this, or an app on your own smartphone or device. You can even set timers - so your blinds open at a certain time in the morning, or close at a specific time in the evening. Plus, smart controls let you program your window coverings around the movement of the sun.

#5 - Choose blockout solutions

You can also completely block the light at certain times of the day by choosing smart blockout fabrics or solutions for your window coverings.

Luxaflex® Dual Roller Blinds, for instance, combine the functionality of two different fabrics in the one roller blind system for the ultimate light and privacy control. You can also pair your choice of blockout fabric with either sunscreen or sheer, for a diffused glow during the day and complete privacy and light control during the evening.

#6 - Cover all heat ‘entry’ points

Often, heat will enter the home through windows that are permanently exposed to the elements - such as skylights, or small windows that sit up high and don’t necessarily need covering from a privacy point of view.  Speak with a Luxflex® consultant about installing covers or blinds on these windows throughout your home, ensuring they don’t become unnecessary sources of heat transfer.
